We already know that a lot of people use Tinder, but how can we see if they’re active on this very popular dating app?
Knowing someone’s activity status is a bit problematic since Tinder doesn’t flat-out tell you; it instead gives you an estimate.
However…there are ways to indirectly check if someone is active on the platform, which I’ll be going over in this article.
The cat’s out of the bag…you can see if someone is active on Tinder.
We can tell if someone is active on Tinder inside and outside the app.
Tinder itself shows you if a person has been recently active, but since users can hide their status in their Settings, we can’t rely solely on this.
These are the 9 signs of an active Tinder profile and how you can use them to see if they’re swiping or not on the platform:
1. “Recently Active” vs. “Online Now” on Tinder.
Let’s get the obvious method out of the way.
If you see “Recently Active” on a user’s profile, it means they’ve been active for the last 24 hours; the “Online Now” status shows they’ve used Tinder in the last 2 hours.
Here you can find it in your Tinder settings:
2. Their social media profiles are riddled with Tinder handles.
Someone wouldn’t have provided their audience with a link to their Tinder profile had they not actively used the app.
Check this person’s social media accounts, and if you see Tinder handles in all of them, you’ll realize they’re active and what their profile looks like.
This is all only a logical observation, of course, but it wouldn’t make sense any other way!
3. You see their profile while swiping.
The fact their profile got recommended to you as a potential match is a sign that Tinder is their holy grail.
Tinder eliminates profiles from people’s feeds if they haven’t been active for over a week; however, they’re replaced by active ones for a more efficient experience.
This depends on the platform’s algorithm, but if you and other people you know have been seeing this person, their activity is probably up the wazoo.
4. Their profile is regularly subjected to aesthetic changes.
We have no choice but to assume a person is active on Tinder if they consistently update their profile.
“Aesthetic” changes mainly include imagery, biography, and basically anything that helps leave a good impression on matches.
They might be uploading new photos every other day and switching up their bio, hence why their profile looks different every time you see it.
5. Tinder updates their location frequently.
Tinder calculates how far matches are from each other to match their distance preferences, i.e. how open they are to dating people from different locations.
And although the app doesn’t state users’ exact locations (for safety purposes, of course), their distance will change according to where they travel.
If your match’s distance is growing/shrinking from yours, it means they have given location permissions to Tinder and are currently active.
6. If someone is active on Tinder, they’ll receive phone notifications.
The more active someone is on Tinder, the more notifications they’ll receive about likes, matches, messages, and in-app alerts.
This of course can happen with inactive profiles as well, but it’s very unlikely as Tinder notifications are related to one’s Tinder activity (e.g. sending likes).
You won’t know if a stranger is receiving push notifications because you can’t see their phone, so these signs are only valid if you suspect your partner is a Tinder aficionado!
7. They are a Tinder subscriber.
Okay, so Tinder does not tell others you’re using Tinder Plus features, or even Gold or Platinum, but you can pretty much tell right off the bat.
Tinder doesn’t allow non-paying users to text people without matching with them first, for instance, and if someone you didn’t swipe right on messages you, they’re most likely a Tinder Gold or Platinum subscriber.
“What does this say about their activity?”, well…it would be a waste of money for them to pay for Tinder and not actively use it.
So, they presumably use Tinder often and give finding matches on it so much importance to the point they feel the need to drop bucks for premium features.
8. Their Tinder images match their social media ones.
If you know this person both on Tinder and social media platforms, compare their latest posts—are they the same?
Let’s say they recently went on a trip; they posted pictures of their trip on Facebook and recycled the same pictures on their Tinder account as well.
This “recycling”, as I call it, is a sign they logged into Tinder not too long ago.
9. Check their phone battery usage.
Almost every mobile device has a place in which people can check what apps drain most of the battery—this is usually found in the Battery section in Settings.
This is the place to check if someone is active on Tinder! But it’s impossible unless you’re close to them and can access their phone.
If you do try this out, check if their app percentage is high; although, even a low percentage makes a big difference if the person you’re dating is using Tinder.
“Recently Active” — What does it mean and how accurate is it?
You’re going to see a “Recently Active” status under a Tinder user’s name if they have been online in the last 24 hours.
For the most part, it is quite accurate (except for a few bugs here and there), but it won’t show you the exact, last time a person used Tinder.
The only information this status gives you is that someone has been swiping left and right no longer than 1-2 days ago.
Tinder profiles stop showing up if they’ve been inactive for more than a week…
Tinder keeps users’ profiles visible for no more than 7 days—once they pass the one-week mark, all is fair game.
It avoids showing inactive profiles because there’s a great chance someone has made a new Tinder profile or left the platform indefinitely.
This is why knowing if a profile is inactive instead is trickier.
Does the red dot on someone’s Tinder profile mean they’re active?
While I do understand where the confusion is coming from, the red dot has nothing to do with a person’s activity on Tinder.
The red dot indicates you’ve received a new notification on Tinder (e.g. a match) or that somebody changed something on their profile.
You don’t need to pay to see if someone is active on Tinder!
Dating apps usually offer more perks to paying users.
But, all you need is some keen observation skills to see if someone uses Tinder excessively. And the best part about it? It’s free.
Other than the green dot on somebody’s profile (which is an activity indicator), don’t be reluctant to rely on other factors, like updates on their Tinder profile.
