If you’re a Tinder veteran, you might have heard the term “ELO Score” thrown around when talking about popularity on the platform.
More or less, this is what determines your profile’s charisma—how many people see it and how many interact with it.
This is it. ELO Score is the head honcho. Having a low one is every dating app connoisseur’s worst nightmare.
Why, Elo there! What is a ELO Score at Tinder:
You might have heard of ELO Score while talking to someone about chess as it’s a rating system used to measure players’ skills.
But we’re not playing chess here. Well, some of us do want to find our kings/queens, but an ELO Score is used differently on Tinder.
It’s your profile’s rating: how “attractive” other Tinder users find it, which ultimately decides who else is going to see it.
In other words, if your profile is a 10, it’s going to be shown to other profiles whose ELO ranking is a 10!
On a related note, your profile’s appearance and the way people interact with it (swiping left or right) also impact your score.
To find your Tinder ELO, you must first analyze your swiping deck. If profiles you deem “unattractive” dominate it, then your ELO Score is quite low. A higher one would mean you see dominantly only attractive profiles; an average one is a balanced combination of both.
Tinder says they no longer rely on ELO Scoring…
Tinder REBUKES the idea of the ELO Score, saying it’s a thing of the past that was replaced by much newer technology.
How the matching process works is solely dependent on the information we provide to Tinder…or so legend has it.
According to them, only age, gender, location, and sexual orientation play a role in matching.
On a smaller scale, Tinder also takes into account additional details WE provide, such as our hobbies, interests, lifestyle, etc.
But most importantly, we have our swiping patterns: who we swipe right/left on is a huge factor in the matches we see.
Tinder Etiquette: Increase your ELO Score:
And now for the question everyone is probably asking.
Yes. You can increase a low ELO Score, but only by implementing small changes to your Tinder profile.
You need to focus on two things: your profile appearance and overall behavior with other users.
Your overall profile.
– DO: Make your profile whole.
Make sure your profile is complete in terms of essential information regarding your personality:
- Age;
- Profession;
- Distance, etc.
Your profile is the very first thing matches judge you based on, so you best believe having a complete one will earn you some points!
– DON’T: Leave anything blank.
The more unfinished your puzzle is, the fewer people will want to interact with you, which will lower your ELO Score.
So, in terms of:
- Photos;
- Bio;
- Crucial details;
- Preferences;
- Interests, do not leave anything unfinished!
Your Images.
– DO: Pick your best photos.
Think of Tinder as a Battle Royale game: you have to do whatever is possible to win, starting with your images.
Upload your absolute BEST images: amazing lighting, dazzling poses, and aesthetically pleasing.
Ask your friends for their input!
– DON’T: Use unclear images.
Ditch low-resolution photos with horrible lighting and photos in groups—one or 2 are fine to show you’re a social butterfly, but putting more will confuse your matches.
Oh, and to increase your ELO Score, I strongly urge you to post more than one image, possibly with you as the main subject.
Interacting with other users.
– Do: Use fun openers.
You can do better than “What’s up?”, especially when the competition is hundreds of other creative people.
Tinder users will ALWAYS go for the person whose opening line made them chuckle, something that helps their ELO Score.
Be innovative!
Take one of your match’s interests and utilize it. For instance, if they’re a veterinarian, you can say something like: “Why on Earth would you use Tinder just so that you can deal with dogs online too?!”.
– DON’T: Be disrespectful.
Tinder doesn’t take kindly to bullies…shocker, huh?
If we treat our matches disrespectfully, they will unmatch us—unmatching brings our ELO Score down considerably, causing our profile to be shown to people who might not be our type later on.
Another thing you must try your hardest to avoid is taking forever to text matches as it might show Tinder you’re not serious.
Swiping pattern.
– DO: Be picky.
Offline and online dating are kind of similar in this aspect: the more desperate one appears, the less luck they’ll have.
If you’re constantly swiping right on everyone, Tinder will see it as a desperate attempt to find literally anyone you can; you might look like a bot also.
– DON’T: Be too close-minded either!
Swiping only left on matches has more or less the same effect. Having unreasonably high standards will mess with your ELO Score as Tinder wouldn’t know who to show you.
I mean, you already skipped the users most compatible with you. As a countermeasure, you might only see people you aren’t attracted to.
Resetting your ELO Score — Can it be done?
In this case, resetting your ELO Score is for the best if you wish to actually find someone on Tinder…but is it possible?
Yes, it is. Possible as it may be, it’s also quite hard because it requires you to either delete your current Tinder profile or pay for a Tinder subscription.
Method 1: Waiting over 90 days to create a new Tinder account.
Why 3 months, you might ask? Well, because Tinder keeps your data for that long before deleting it.
So, if you want to recycle the same info (phone number, photos, email, etc.), you must delete your present profile, and wait for around 92 days to create a new one.
Not waiting for this long may cause your old ELO Score to carry onto your new one. Note that this does not work if your account is banned, though!
Method 2: Opening a new Tinder account right away.
Don’t want to wait 3 months just to use Tinder again? DatingZest got you.
Go to Tinder and sign up using a phone number from DatingZest—you mustn’t use your old one as Tinder might play the same tricks on you.
And unless you want to buy and maintain a phone number just for Tinder, DZ is the choice for you. It’s inexpensive and effective.
After having gotten your phone number from DatingZest, sign up on Tinder and use the code sent to you on the DatingZest page.
After your account is created, make sure to follow the tips I’ve shared with you above on how to increase your ELO Score.
– VERY IMPORTANT: Do not use the same information, such as email address, photos, and payment methods as you did with your old account.
Method 3: Trying out a Tinder subscription.
A lot of people are asking about how useful a Tinder subscription might be in the context of increasing your ELO Score.
To that, I say that technically a Tinder Plus, Gold, or Platinum subscription might better your chances of finding quality matches.
Each of these subscriptions offers many perks that may prove useful in improving your ELO Score, such as:
- Passport, which makes it possible for you to look for matches in areas different from yours;
- Boost, which puts your profile on top of people’s feeds for them to see;
- Pre-matching Messaging, which will enable you to make connections with people before matching;
- Prioritized Likes, which put you on top of the list of the people you’ve liked.
Keep in mind that although this might be technically true, there’s no guarantee that paying for Tinder is a foolproof solution.
Low ELO Score vs. Shdowbanned — Which one are you?
Telling these two apart can be confusing because they each share the same signs: no matches.
Nevertheless, each of these 2 instances has its own unique signs.
– Being shadowbanned means having your profile gradually turn invisible due to Tinder’s independent decision.
Other signs of shadowbanning include a glitchy app, suddenly getting ghosted, no likes, and having been given a warning by Tinder.
– On the other hand, a low ELO Score entails seeing matches that aren’t up to your standards, simply because Tinder has put you at the bottom of the list.
In that respect, incompatible matches are the most prominent sign!
No matter which, you can do this!
Liam.
